Description

Under general supervision, the HVAC Controls Technician performs the installation of controls, wiring, sensors, and devices for City of Round Rock’s building automated systems. Installs, programs, and commissions building automation systems (e.g., HVAC, lighting, security, fire/life safety). The primary focus of this position is on the new installation, maintenance, and repairs of Niagara software and system.

Posted pay range is the starting salary.  Pay rate offered is based on experience.

Examples of Duties

  • Troubleshoots and repairs DDC (Direct Digital Controls) and Building Automated Systems (BAS) from manufacturers including Trane, ALC/Carrier, Johnson Controls, Honeywell, Lennox and Niagara.
  • Collaborates with engineers, contractors, and Round Rock Building Construction teams on new construction and retrofit projects.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and system upgrades to existing BAS infrastructure to ensure optimal performance.
  • Installs controllers, smart thermostats, and creates front-end floor plans for existing facilities.
  • Coordinates with the Building Construction Division on new facilities and the Facility Maintenance Division on existing facilities to document facility finishes, shut-off locations, life safety system locations, and product information within the BAS front end, serving as a single source for data.
  • Collaborates with HVAC technicians to resolve mechanical issues. Focuses primarily on the BAS system while also troubleshooting and repairing HVAC systems as needed.
  • Integrates and configures communication protocols such as BACnet, MSTP, and IP. Spends time throughout the week viewing trends of various facilities to look for anomalies. Works with lighting controls contractor to bring lighting onto front end.
  • Collaborates with the Building Construction Division, engineers, and third-party vendors to develop a standard list of mechanical unit points to use for new projects.
  • Creates and manages system alarms for urgent and routine maintenance needs and maintains occupied/unoccupied schedules to optimize energy efficiency.
  • Coordinates with IT, HVAC contractors, and HVAC controls vendors to oversee new installations and transition existing units onto the BAS system.

Experience and Training

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Two (2) to five (5) years of documentable HVAC Controls repairs, installation, testing, programing and troubleshooting required. 
  • Must have a minimum of five (5) years HVAC experience. 
  • Preferred experience in Niagara software system.

Certificates and Licenses Required

  • HVAC Certification Valid Texas driver’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire 
  • Niagara 4 Technical Certification required
  • Two (2)-week rolling on-call rotation required
