The Refrigeration Technician organizes & performs advanced service, repairs, troubleshooting & overhauls to ammonia refrigeration system in a manner that complies with federal, state, & local codes and standards, as well as Company rules, PSM/RMP policies, safe work practices & RAGAGEPs.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Follow all Company policies & procedures such as GMPs, Food Safety, PSM/RMP, Lockout Tagout, Confined Space, etc.
- Check ammonia valves of the manufacturing plant, outside, condenser, & exhaust fans.
- Execute complex repairs & major overhauls to system components & associated equipment, utilizing original equipment manufacturer’s recommendations & specifications and/or other recognized & generally accepted good engineering practices.
- Understand complex electrical schematics, PLC control functions, & Electrical Distributions systems & the ability to troubleshoot root causes & determine proper repairs.
- Perform charging, evacuation, & pressure testing of system vessels & components during projects & Line Equipment procedures in accordance with established policies & industry standards.
- Perform installations & replacements of refrigeration system components & associated equipment, within the guidelines set forth by the management of change procedure.
- Analyze system data & trending values to determine the need for increased maintenance frequencies or improved maintenance procedures & safe work practices.
- Assist department management in the supervision & documentation of contractor activity & performance on or around the process equipment.
- Participate as a trained team member for chemical releases or spills as required.
- Assist in the operation, maintenance, & continuous improvement of other utility systems.

Job Qualifications and Requirements:
- 2 years of verifiable Ammonia Refrigeration experience preferred.
- Experience with operation & maintaining ammonia refrigeration systems in excess of 10,000 pounds of ammonia.
- RETA based Industrial Ammonia Operator training program preferred.
- Hazmat training preferred.
- Knows machines & tools, including their designs, uses, repair, & maintenance.
- Able to use critical thinking to identify strengths & weaknesses of alternative solutions or approaches to problems.
Physical Demands:
- Must be able to stand & walk for long periods of time.
- Standing/walking 100% of the workday.
- Lifting various weights on an as needed basis.
- Must be able to bend, stoop, & climb steps.
- Able to work at heights & in dangerous places where balance is poor, specifically on a roof.
- Working in an organic environment with various temperatures.
- Able to wear an Air Purifying Respirator and a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus.
- Medical evaluation, physical examination & pulmonary testing for Hazmat purposes (required for pre-employment & annually thereafter).
