Title: Automation Controls Specialist

Shift: 1st Shift | Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Flexible)

Salary: $75,000 – $90,000 per year; dependent on experience plus 100% company-paid health premiums and 3% IRA match

Automation & Controls Specialist Role:

This role exists to design, program, and commission the "brains" of high-precision industrial machinery, ensuring complex multi-axis motion control systems operate with seamless logic. Our client relies on this position to transform raw mechanical designs into production-ready automated solutions through expert software development and hands-on hardware troubleshooting.

Automation & Controls Specialist Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain sophisticated motion logic for machines featuring up to 40 axes of coordinated movement
  • Lead full-cycle commissioning to take equipment from "dead metal" to a production-ready state
  • Program multi-language logic using CODESYS, proprietary motion languages, or BASIC-style environments
  • Power up electrical circuits and use a multimeter to troubleshoot power and signal issues
  • Coordinate 3-axis simultaneous movement while implementing "common sense" logic to prevent mechanical collisions
  • Collaborate with mechanical designers to identify if system faults are code-based or physical hardware binds
  • Execute PID loop tuning and vibration filtering to optimize machine stability and performance
  • Maintain clean, structured project documentation and well-commented code for all automation sequences
  • Perform occasional "special ops" on-site support for top-tier national clients to resolve expert-level technical issues
  • Integrate industrial networking protocols and I/O interfacing for sensors, actuators, and drives
  • Implement machine safety protocols including E-stops, light curtains, and safety-rated logic
  • Partner with the ownership and engineering leadership to meet rigorous design specifications and deadlines

Automation & Controls Specialist Reporting Relationships:

  • The candidate will report directly to the Engineering Manager and will not have any direct reports.

About You:

  • Possess 3 to 5 years of hands-on experience making industrial machines move through motion control or robotics
  • Demonstrate proficiency in CODESYS (IEC 61131-3) or similar motion programming environments
  • Read and interpret complex electrical schematics and mechanical drawings with high accuracy
  • Exhibit expertise with motion controllers and drives such as Trio, Yaskawa, or Kollmorgen
  • Navigate mechatronics, electrical, or computer science principles to bridge the gap between software and hardware
  • Show the ability to work unsupervised as a self-starter in a small, highly flexible OEM environment
  • Utilize a multimeter safely to diagnose electrical issues at the component level
  • Communicate technical concepts clearly to both internal team members and high-profile clients
  • Maintain U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency as our client is unable to provide visa sponsorship
  • Manage projects independently from the initial concept phase through final on-site commissioning
  • Thrive in a "no-red-tape" culture that prioritizes results and technical curiosity over formal degrees

Next Steps:

  • If you are a hands-on problem solver and a self-starter, we would like to hear from you.

Additional Information: Equal Opportunity Employer:

  • Our client provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or genetics.

Physical Demands:

  • This role requires the ability to stand for long periods, work inside industrial electrical panels, and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is primarily performed in an on-site manufacturing and engineering facility in Strongsville, OH; minimal travel is required for client startup and expert-level support
