Description We’re seeking a detail-oriented and client-focused Mechanical Engineer / Estimator to support a growing mechanical retrofit and replacement portfolio. This role blends technical expertise with strong communication skills to deliver cost-effective, high-quality solutions. The ideal candidate excels in mechanical design, estimating, and client engagement, and is comfortable adapting to evolving tools and processes.
Key Responsibilities
Develop ASHRAE RTS/CLTD heat loss/gain calculations, equipment selections, and duct/piping system designs for retrofit and replacement projects.
Prepare accurate proposals and estimates that align with project scopes, budgets, and client expectations.
Conduct site surveys of existing facilities to collect field data, create as-builts, and identify system improvement opportunities.
Perform mechanical takeoffs on engineered plans for new mechanical projects.
Collaborate with internal teams (HVAC, Electrical, Controls, Plumbing) and subcontractors to deliver practical and cost-efficient designs.
Communicate with clients to clarify scope, present recommendations, and address questions professionally and promptly.
Produce competitive estimates including labor hour projections and material takeoffs to support sales initiatives.
Participate in proposal reviews, pre-construction meetings, and project kickoff sessions.
Review and qualify equipment vendors and subcontractors to ensure best-value selections.
Develop control system sequences of operation and points lists for BAS and retrofit projects.
Support field personnel with constructability reviews and resolve installation challenges.
Review and approve test and balance and commissioning reports to confirm system performance.
Stay current with estimating platforms and tools to enhance accuracy and efficiency.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent HVAC estimating experience.
Demonstrated ability to scope and price mechanical retrofit and replacement projects.
Proficiency with heat load calculations (e.g., Trane Trace 3D), hydronic piping and duct system design tools (e.g., HVAC Solution Pro), refrigerant piping sizing, and mechanical drafting software (AutoCAD, Revit, Visio).
Strong analytical and mathematical skills for estimating and takeoff accuracy.
Field experience including site surveys, equipment evaluation, and troubleshooting.
Familiarity with HVAC software, energy codes, and engineering calculation methods.
Knowledge of mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection codes and standards.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, CAD software, and estimating platforms.
Ability to learn and adopt new estimating technologies quickly.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a client-service mindset.
